For the first time in six years we have the top four male tennis players in the world meeting in a Grand Slam semi-final. We have seen a lot of finals between Nadal and Federer when they were one and two in the world, but not the top four. This is no doubt a promoters dream, and for tennis fans a moment worth enjoying. For punters, you have the tough task trying to work out who is going to proceed into the French Open finals.
The form going into these semi-finals has been interesting. Andy Murray will meet Rafael Nadal, and neither of these players have played well in early rounds. Murray had to come from two sets down to win his fourth round match while Nadal has also conceded two sets for the first time in many years.
In the other semi-final, man of the moment Novak Djokovic meets former world number one Roger Federer. Djokovic has over forty consecutive wins to his credit going into this match while Federer is enjoying a rare glimpse of his former playing strength. The question for many is whether or not he is still up to this level.
Bookmakers have no doubt on who is going to win. Murray is at 5/1 to defeat Nadal with bookmakers quoting him at 2/11. Djokovic is not quite as short – he is at 4/11 with Federer at 5/2.
These are going to be two tough matches. I like the way Murray clawed his way back into his round four match, however, he cannot afford to give Nadal that sort of start. Nadal will not give up a two set lead and lose. Djokovic has had a really easy path into these semi-finals, perhaps too easy. Federer is really firing and could spring the surprise.
We’re tipping Murray to cause a huge upset, however, we cannot say the same for Federer – we’re sticking with Djokovic to win his semi and then go on and win the final.
