At the half-way point of the PGA Championship at Wentworth, there’s a three way tie, making for a challenging betting proposition. The new course has proved to be difficult for some with club professional Jamie Harris missing the cut with a 25 over. Masters champion Charl Schwartzel also missed the cut at 12 over along with Ireland’s Graeme McDowell at 5 over. Rory McIlroy just made the cut with a shot to spare.
The interest today is in the leaders with exciting youngster Matteo Manassero sharing the lead with Luke Donald and the big-hitting Alvaro Quiros. They are two shots clear of Thomas Aiken, David Horsey, and Jose Manuel Lara. Lee Westwood is the best of the big names, five shots off the lead.
In golf betting, Luke Donald heads the list at 3/1 from Alvaro Quiros at 9/2 and Matteo Manassero at 11/2. Lee Westwood is out to 12/1 with the remainder of the field at 15/1 or better. All the betting action is on those top four and it’s hard to see anyone finishing over the top of the leaders if they hold their form.
Matteo Manassero is well worth consideration in this event. Although only 18, he has played with the style expected of a more experienced golfer. It may be his youthful approach to the game that is helping him to success. He certainly doesn’t appear to have a fear of any golf course, unlike some of the top players who done nothing more than complain about how hard the course has become. Manassero hasn’t played on the old course so he can’t make any comparisons – he just plays on what he sees in front of him.
Our tip – Manassero is well placed on this course. He is playing well and has shown a cool head when leading. He already has three wins this year and he would love to add this premier event. Luke Donald can edge closer to world and/or European number one with a victory. Back Manassero each way – he’s almost certainly to finish in the top five.
