We did well in the Canadian tennis events last week predicting both the finalists and the winners in both the men’s and women’s events. Djokovic now has an impressive 53-1 record for 2011 although he did drop a set in the final of the Toronto Masters. He is back in action this week in Cincinnati as he rolls on towards the US Open in two weeks. Serena Williams is also back in action following her win in the Rogers Cup last week, and given the high drop out rate of women in this year’s US Open, she is looking good for another Grand Slam win.
Bookmakers have posted Djokovic a 7/5 favourite to win in Cincinnati with Rafael Nadal, the only person to beat Djokovic this year, second favourite at 7/2 in tennis betting. Roger Federer is at 6/1, Andy Murray 9/1, and Juan Martin Del Potro the best of the rest at 14/1. It is hard to back against Djokovic given his current form, especially on the harder surfaces they are now playing on. Federer is nowhere near his best and is on the wane while Murray is so unpredictable at present.
Nadal looks good on court until he comes up against Djokovic, then he looks second rate and easy pickings for the world number one. Djokovic could still be his own worst enemy. He dropped a set last week against Mardy Fish, not because Fish played brilliantly, but because Djokovic got lazy – something he can’t afford to do against Del Potro or Nadal. One gets the feeling that Djokovic is becoming bored with victory after victory. We’re tipping Del Potro at long odds – just a small wager, but at 14/1, it will be a good return if we collect.
In the women’s event, we’re tipping Serena Williams (21/10) to win. Her odds are reasonable for a favourite and with no real challengers in form at present, she may just sneak through. She is playing strong tennis at present really belying her age. Of the others, Caroline Wozniacki (13/2) and Victoria Azarenka (7/1) are chances, particularly if Williams has the misfortune of any early exit.
