England are the world T20 champions and quite rightly go into today’s game against Sri Lanka as odds on favourites. However, if there is to be an upset, it could come courtesy of the decisions by rookie captain Stuart Broad. England are in the strange situation of having a different test, one day, and T20 captains. There is no doubting Broad’s experience in the game, however, he has never captained a team as an adult – and this could be telling.
Sri Lanka are not slouches when it comes to the shorter versions of the game. They have been world champions in the 50 over one day version and gave a good account of themselves in the recent T20 championships. Bookmakers have them at 15/13 to win in T20 betting – respectable odds considering their experience. England are odds on at 8/11 while the unlikely draw is out to 28/1.
England are not the only side to blood a new captain, Sri Lanka are as well. The big difference is that Sri Lanka also have Mahela Jayawardene, Kumar Sangakkara and Sanath Jayasuriya in the side – all former captains bringing with them a wealth of experience. England have left out former captain Paul Collingwood as they look to build a new team for the future.
This match will be a lot closer than many people expect. Sri Lanka are good odds to win and are definitely worth some thought. It is going to be a match of youthful exuberance (England) versus seasoned experience (Sri Lanka) – we’re tipping seasoned experience to win.
Following this T20 match, both teams will reform for a one day series – you can expect that to be highly competitive.
