State Of Origin Showdown – Who’ll Start Favourite?

The annual State of Origin rugby league series is set for a grand finish early tomorrow morning with New South Wales and Queensland having one win each. Queensland have home ground advantage, but New South Wales are certainly on a confidence boosting roll. They only lost the first game through some good luck on the part of Queensland; they then came out and were pretty convincing against a lackluster Queensland defense.

Queensland will most likely start as favourites although betting is very tight. One bookmaker had Queensland as 9/10 favourite and New South Wales at 10/9 while another had New South Wales at 9/10 and Queensland at evens. This will be a close final and it could come down to desire as much as execution – and that may be where Queensland could have the edge.

There are several factors in Queensland’s favour when it comes to desire – they are protecting a record 6 consecutive series wins. More importantly, this will be their captain’s last State of Origin appearance. He is already a legend in international rugby league circles and his presence on the field often lifts them an extra notch. Knowing he is playing his last game may be enough to lift Queensland over New South Wales.

State of Origin football is one of the most popular rugby league competitions worldwide – it even trumps the Rugby League World Cup in terms of TV audiences. Australian punters are very divided when it comes to picking a winner. International punters are a little less swayed by loyalties and their money has gone onto Queensland. We’re in agreement – Queensland to win by less than 10.
