Slim Pickings On This Weekend’s Football Betting

With international matches being played everywhere this weekend and early next week, it’s slim pickings for those seeking football betting options. The Premier League and Championship League are having a weekend off, but online bookmakers are still fielding strong interest in both the League One and League Two competitions.

Of course, there is a lot of side interest in the fortunes of Liverpool with another American group set to take over ownership of the club. New England Sports Ventures (NESV), owners of the Boston Red Sox, are reported to be ready to invest some £300 million in the venture. Everything now awaits a legal challenge by current US owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett, who stand to lose £144 million if the sale goes ahead. Most pundits expect their challenge to be unsuccessful – with Liverpool currently sitting in the bottom division of the table, one would hope that some sort of end to this saga is in sight.

All that aside, there is football this weekend in the lower divisions and there are one or two good bets on offer. In League One, the match between Walsall and Exeter looks to be interesting. Walsall are at the bottom of the table while Exeter are just outside the top six. For some reason, online bookmakers have made Walsall favourites at 13/8. Exeter are slightly longer at 15/8. A bit of simple maths would suggest you could back both and come away in front should either win. The better bet is probably the draw at 12/5 and that’s our tip in an interesting betting match.

If you’re looking for an upset win then Hartlepool at 9/4 against Peterborough (13/10) is well worth looking at. Hartlepool will be hard to beat at home.

In League Two, the standout bet at good value has to be Rotherham at home to Stevenage. Bookies have the home side at 15/13 while the visitors are at 11/4. Any time you can back a top three side at better than even money when they are at home against a weaker opposition – take it – and we will.

Football returns to some normalcy next weekend so check back for the latest news, reviews and the best odds from online bookmakers.
