With the four tennis grand slam events done and dusted for the year eyes now turn to the Davis Cup. Serbia are currently short priced favourites to take the title this year with the best price on offer at 6/4. France are next best at 2/1 followed by Argentina at 4/1 and the Czech Republic at 8/1.
This weekend’s semi-final between Serbia and the Czech Republic will be interesting with Novak Djokovic playing only four days after his loss to Nadal in the US Open this week. He will play Radek Stepanek in the first rubber then back up to play Tomas Berdych in the reverse singles.
Much will depend on how well Djokovic has recovered from his US Open campaign. He played a long semi-final match against Federer then had to endure a final that was hampered and delayed through rain. If he is on song then Serbia may well sail through their final.
Serbia are 4/9 to win with the Czech Republic now out to 9/4. Djokovic and Berdych both have good records for their country in the Davis Cup so it will be an interesting final. Serbia to win at short odds.
In the second semi-final France take on Argentina in what now looks to be a much tighter tie. Richard Gasquet has withdrawn leaving France to call up Michael Llodra in the singles. Argentina’s David Nalbandian has the best record of any current player in Davis Cup with a 20-4 win-loss record.
Argentina are currently at 9/5 to win the tie against with France easing favourites at 4/9 with online bookmakers. Nalbandian really plays with heart in Davis Cup matches and France are undoubtedly weakened by Gasquet’s withdrawal. At 9/5, Argentina look to be a good bet, however, they got to this point last year with a home ground advantage and still managed to lose. We’ll go with Argentina in what should be a close tie.
