As the American NFL enters the final stages of another successful season, eight teams will do battle in what has been dubbed a ‘Wildcard Weekend’. Four teams will see their season over while the four victors will go into the playoffs hoping to make it to this years Super Bowl in Indianapolis, Indiana. NFL betting suggests the wildcard victors will struggle to make it to the Super Bowl with New England having a stranglehold on the AFC and Green Bay having a similar stranglehold on the NFC.
Bookmakers have made the Green Bay Packers the outright favorite to take out this years Super Bowl with odds of 2/1. The New England Patriots are at 4/1 while the New Orleans Saints, should they make it through their wildcard game, are at 5/1.
There are three wildcard games today and whilst all three look to be easy picks on paper, end results are never quite that easy. The Detroit Lions (19/4) host the New Orleans Saints (2/11) – bookmakers are leaning heavily towards the Saints and there is a strong feeling they could challenge Green Bay for the NFC title. They would need to win well here if they want to maintain that momentum. We think they will, however, at 2/11, you’re better off saving your money.
Both the Atlanta Falcons (23/17) and New York Giants (4/6) appear to be out of favor with punters with both teams quoted at 25/1 or longer to win the Superbowl. The Giants are favorites for today’s game, however, we’re picking the Falcons to outscore their opponents.
The final game is between the Pittsburgh Steelers (2/7) and the Denver Broncos (10/3). Pittsburgh are at short odds to win, and whilst they may have some good form coming into this game, the Broncos are not a side that are easily beaten. Our head says to stick with the Steelers, however, we’re throwing caution to the wind and backing the Broncos.
