Horse Racing – Tight Betting In December Gold Cup

This Saturday Cheltenham hosts the annual December Gold Cup. Like many hunt meetings this season, the field is wide open with at least six or seven strong chances to win. Even the bookmakers are struggling to determine who to make favourite, a perfect time to go odds shopping around your favourite bookmakers.

General consensus has Quantitativeeasing as the 6/1 favourite, however, Bet365 has him at 7/1. PaddyPower has made Ghizao the favourite at 6/1 with Great Endeavour and Quantitativeeasing at 7/1; and Divers, Sunnyhillboy and Quel Esprit all at 8/1. Just to further confuse the issue, Ladbrokes have Great Endeavor as the 6/1 favourite.

This will be an interesting race. Great Endeavour defeated Quantitativeeasing and Divers in the Paddy Power Gold at Prestbury Park last month. All three appeared to pull up fine after that race and they all primed to win on Saturday. Quantitativeeasing probably had a little more improvement in him following that race, hence his dominance has favourite by many of the bookmakers.

Divers is probably the horse worth watching. Divers has a good record at Cheltenham having during last season’s festival meeting. Divers is slightly worse off in the weights, but looks capable of carrying it. Of the others, we really like the look of Sunnyhillboy. He ran a good third in this last year and does race well at Cheltenham. He’s also got such a lightweight compared to those around him so the distance won’t be a problem – he’s a true stayer, although not renown for any bursts of speed.

Our tip – for value, we like Sunnyhillboy each way – you can still get 10/1 at BetFred, good value even in the each way market. We also like Ghizao – this horse comes from a stable that knows how to win this race, and from an owner who actually sponsors this race – that’s a few good pluses. We’re tipping Medermit for third, a promising chaser at 14/1 who could play a big part in the finish.
