One of the classics of golf gets underway tomorrow as players line up for the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship. Unlike most other golf tournaments, this tournament is played over three very different courses, St. Andrews, Kingsbarns and Carnoustie. The latter is by far the harder of the three with players considering they have had a good day if they can walk away with a par round.
Martin Kaymer has had some success in this tournament in recent years with a second in 2008 and a win last year. Interestingly, no golfer has successfully defended their title in this championship, a fact recognized by bookmakers, opening his odds at 14/1. If you like tight golf betting, then that’s what this tournament offers.
Bookmakers have Rory McIlroy as favourite at 10/1 followed closely by Lee Westwood at 11/1 and Luke Donald at 12/1. Apart from Kaymer, the next group are around the 22/1 mark, but that too is a tight group that includes Simon Dyson, Dustin Johnson, Charl Schwartzel and Robert Karlsson. The Alfred Dunhill Links Championship is a real test of a golfers skills. Playing four days on one course can be demanding. Try playing on a different course each day and it gets even harder.
Kaymer does have a good record in this event, and his form this year has been reasonable. He did climb briefly to world number one, however, he has slipped to be ranked at sixth now. Can he do it again? I don’t follow the trend where punters back off if no ones ‘done it before’. These are the records that are always made to be broken, and Kaymer may just have the all-around ability to do it. At 14/1, he’s good value, even on an each way basis.
