Golf Betting Blown Open Without Woods

Tiger Woods lasted nine holes of the Players Championships before limping off unable to continue. There is now speculation that his career may be at an end – it has certainly caused a lot of confusion in betting markets for the major tournaments over the next few months. Woods himself has not helped matters by not being clear as to his future – his latest words were along the lines of “I may play, or I may not” – that’s a big help to betters that enjoy a punt on golf. Of course, for most serious punters, his form is such that he isn’t even considered a chance these days.

While Woods is contemplating his future once more, other players are still out there chasing their balls and in the Players Championships. Two of them will go into the final round today with their eyes firmly set on the world number one crown. Graeme McDowell and Nick Watney currently hold the lead although they will be doing it tough today. Their third round had to be halted after only five holes with a four storm spoiling their fun.

McDowell can take back the number one crown by finishing in the top two today while Watney can claim the title if he wins and McDowell finishes third, or worse. They will have a long day having to play out the remainder of day three and then all of day four. If more storms arrive, we may well see play being finished tomorrow.

Bookmakers have Watney a short-priced 2/5 favourite to take the title from McDowell at 9/2. The next best are Steve Stricker at 8/1 and Luke Donald at 17/2. Watney is playing well, however, McDowell has shown some impressive form this year and at 9/2 looks to be better value. He is well placed so an each way bet at 9/8 for a top five finish almost looks to be money in the bank. Our tip – McDowell each way.
