Golf Betting – USPGA A Real Raffle This Year

There is one thing about golf this year that you can absolutely rely on – no one’s consistent. It’s hard to find multiple tournament winners and even harder to find players who have won consecutive tournaments. Golf lacks a real star at present, and while that’s good for golf betting, it’s not so good for the sport. Tiger Woods is nowhere near as dangerous as he was two years ago while Rory McIlroy, the next so called ’star’, has only really had the one good tournament all year – but what a tournament.

This year’s USPGA event kicks off today and while Rory McIlroy is the bookmakers’ favourite, the tournament really is a raffle this year. Almost half the field could lay claim to having a chance of winning, and the other half could also spring a surprise winner. The problem with golf this year is that so many of the top golfers have made bad starts and proceeded beyond the half way cut. This makes it difficult to make predictions on form.

McIlroy’s great win in the US Open quite rightly makes him a favourite for this tournament. However, no one has won multiple tournaments this year. Can he break that trend and secure a second major? Bookmakers have him favourite at 11/1 ahead of Luke Donald, the current number one (and without a major to his name) and the former number one Lee Westwood (also without a major to his name). They are both being quoted at 14/1.

Phil Mickelson (22/1) is always in the top five when it comes to golf betting, but he has disappointed while Tiger Woods rounds out that top five at 25/1. The Australian pair of Adam Scott and Jason Day are both next best at 26/1. They both finished in the top three in last weekend’s WGC-Bridgestone Invitational, with Donald the only golfer to separate them.

At this early stage, we like Donald to break through for a maiden major. He seems to be mentally right and really held it all together last weekend. At 14/1, he’s good value, especially with each way bookmakers. This year’s USPGA certainly looks to be an interesting tournament so don’t be surprised if the winner comes from the long list of players we haven’t even mentioned.
