What a spectacular couple of days of tennis. Murray, then Federer, and now Djokovic out of the men’s tournament while the Williams sisters, early favourite Henin and Wozniak have also exited. They have been great matches as well but what has been interesting is the trends of betting odds on each of the players.
Of course, with the elite men out Nadal is almost unbackable to win yet another Roland Garros trophy. There is still a little niggle in the back of my mind – Nadal’s opponent in the final will most likely be Robin Soderling and guess who knocked Nadal out of last year’s French Open? Nadal’s betting odds have tumbled to worse than 1/3 while Soderling is around the 9/2 mark.
Those two do have to survive their respective semi-finals of course with Nadal taking Jurgen Melzer, the oldest player left in the tournament. Soderling faces an in-form Tomas Berdych and that could be an interesting match. Bookmakers have Nadal at 1/33 to win his final – Soderling is at more respectable odds of 1/2.
On the women’s side, I hope you caught our tip earlier when we suggested than Samantha Stosur could cause a few upsets. A few? Stosur sawed off Justine Henin then followed up by beating world number one Serena Williams. Suddenly the tide has turned on this young lady and where, just a few days ago, you could get 20/1 or better – she is now outright favourite to win at 7/5.
Those odds are a little short given she has to get past former number one Jelena Jankovic (5/2) in the semi-final and then probably Elena Dementieva (5/1). The latter has to get past another rising star in Francesca Schiavone (11/2) to make the finals.
The tennis is not over by a long shot and I feel that more surprises could be around the corner with more tightening in the French Open betting odds. In outrights, Robin Soderling looks a value bet while Dementieva looks to be the best value in the women’s draw.
