European Horses Set To Plunder Melbourne Cup

The richest two mile race in the world is set for today and while it may be staged on the other side of the globe, European horses look set to bring home the spoils – again. The Melbourne Cup is said to be the race that stops a nation, and it certainly comes close. Australians love their horse racing and the Melbourne Cup over two miles is the pinnacle of their racing year.

Irish pair Vintage Crop and Media Puzzle have found success in this race in the past and last year the spoils went to the France trained Americain. He is back to defend his win this year and with him is another French contender, Dunaden – and he has a win over Americain this year as well. English horses have performed well in recent years, however, their best efforts have been to fill minor placings. Perhaps this is the year for the English horse. Mark Johnston’s Jukebox Jury is the best priced UK horse this year while Luca Cumani’s has Manighar who could be a chance at longer odds.

In Melbourne Cup betting, Americain is favourite at 9/2 ahead of Dunaden at 7/1. Jukebox Jury is at 12/1 while Manighar is at 33/1. Of the local horses, Niwot has been heavily backed late and has firmed from 15/1 into 10/1. An interesting runner is former English galloper Glass Harmonium. He has a great record over shorter distances so he could find the two miles too far – if he stays, he’s going to give the finish a real shake.

For ours, it’s hard to go past Americain. He has done everything right since winning last year, and it does take a good horse to win back-to-back Melbourne Cups. Niwot has struck good form over the last month and has to be amongst the chances. However, we’re steering clear of all the hype and tipping a quiet achiever – Jukebox Jury. He’s worked well and he’s well priced. Jukebox Jury to win from Americain and Niwot with Glass Harmonium our roughie.
