The Epsom Derby is a race that is well known throughout the world. It’s been a race that has been won by champions, and a race that has broken the hearts of champions. Carlton House is the early favourite with bookmakers although there have been dramas surrounding him. Carlton House was as short as 11/8 in some markets but has now drifted out to 2/1 or better.
While Carlton House has his detractors, the second favourite Pour Moi has very slowly firmed and looks to be in fine form – you can still back him at 4/1 if you’re quick. Should connections decide to withdraw Carlton House, you can expect Pour Moi’s odds to tumble rather quickly.
Before heading to the Derby on Saturday, we have Ladies Day tomorrow with the running of the Oaks and the Coronation Cup. There has been plenty of interest in this year’s Oaks with anyone of the top six or seven having realistic chances of winning. In betting, Blue Bunting heads the market at 2/1 ahead of Wonder Of Wonders at 4/1 and Havant at 6/1. There has been money for Misty For Me at 7/1 and Zain Al Boldan at 10/1.
We like the form of Wonder Of Wonders and she looks to be good value at 4/1. It’s hard to go past Blue Bunting on form, but 2/1 looks to be a little short given the quality of horses in this year’s race. We’re tipping Wonder Of Wonders ahead of Blue Bunting with Beatrice Aurore worth an each-way bet at 16/1.
In the Derby, we’re selecting Pour Moi ahead of the favourite. Injuries leading into a big race like this make it too much of a risk. We’ll stick to some value, and we have that with Pour Moi.
