EPL – Have Online Bookmakers Written Off The Season?

With four rounds still to be played in the English Premier League, it seems online bookmakers have already closed out the season. Chelsea’s betting odds are at 1/30 to win the title; Arsenal and Manchester United are locked into top three finishes and betting has already commenced on next season’s results.

Bookmakers are still setting books on individual games and there is still a race for fourth and fifth place that may spark some interest from punters. However, as tough as it may seem, is the season really over for the top three? Arsenal can still claim second place and Manchester United could still make a last minute grab at top spot. It all hinges on this weekend’s games and what an opener they have lined up for us.

The Northern derby between Manchester City and Manchester United is always lively. City host the game yet United will run out as favourites, albeit marginally. Online bookmakers have United at 6/4 with City at 9/5.  For both sides, it’s a must-win situation. United have to win to stay in contact with Chelsea at the top and City have to win if they want to claim a top five finish at the end of the season.

The second derby is today’s late game and features Spurs hosting Chelsea. Spurs put an end to Arsenal’s hopes of finishing on top this season and, at home, could well spoil Chelsea’s party. Bookmakers again are favouring the visitors with Chelsea betting odds at 1/1 and Spurs surprisingly out to 10/3.  Spurs are another side that needs to win to stay in the top five. You can get 5/2 the draw for each of those games.

The third game of interest is that between Wigan and Arsenal. Wigan are in danger of relegation but they can still be dangerous. They have a reasonable home record while Arsenal’s away record is not great. Online bookmakers have Wigan’s betting odds at 5/1 and Arsenal’s short at 4/7.

Are the bookmakers right? Is the season over, all but the shouting? This weekend will soon sort that out! Our tips – Manchester City, Spurs and Arsenal.
