Novak Djokovic is really riding a wave of success with a record that sees him unbeaten in 2011 following more than 30 successive match wins – there are even more if you include the last three months of 2010. Djokovic saw off the field last week defeating both Nadal and Federer to claim the Indian Wells tournament. The ATP has moved to Miami where online bookmakers had no hesitation in making him the outright favourite.
While Djokovic may have beaten Nadal in last week’s final, bookmakers are not writing off Nadal. Djokovic is at 5/2 to win just ahead of Nadal at 3/1. The focus of tennis betting has moved from the Nadal/Federer battle for favouritism to the Nadal/Djokovic tussle. Federer is getting longer priced every time he appears in a tournament. Bookmakers have pushed him out to 5/1 in some markets, a price not seen at the start of a tournament for several years.
The player that bookmakers have given up on is Andy Murray. He is out the back at 11/1 with Juan Martin del Potro pressuring him at 12/1. I suggest you wait for Murray until the tour hits Canada – he seems to have a real grip on the Montreal Masters having won that event over the last three years.
The US Open is still almost six months away, but bookmakers already have Djokovic at 3/1 equal favourite with Nadal to win that event. Federer is also easing in that market with most bookies offering 4/1 – however, there is a smattering of 9/2 available if you look. Andy Murray is considered more likely to win that event than the Miami event with bookies posting him at 7/1 in early betting.
Has Roger Federer finally exceeded his use by date? I wouldn’t write him off just yet – there’s still some life in those legs of his.
