We look like having three English teams making it through to the quarter finals of the Champions League. Betting odds on this week’s round favour all but one of the home teams. Arsenal and Manchester United play this week with Chelsea involved with next week’s ties.
Arsenal made life tough for themselves in the first leg of their tie with FC Porto, however, at home they should be far too strong. Their betting odds suggest an easy victory, however, this is Champions League football and teams often play beyond their recognised abilities, as was shown in the first leg of this clash. Arsenal is being quoted as short as 4/7 although most prices have them at 2/3. FC Porto are at 11/2 with most bookmakers. Arsenal have to win to move through on aggregate results.
Manchester United are also firm favourites with bookmakers quoting them at 8/11. They are up against a good side in AC Milan with bookmakers quoting them at 9/2. Like Arsenal, United at home are fairly hard to defeat. A win will also see United through to the quarter finals and a meeting with Arsenal to determine who goes through to the finals.
Chelsea play their reverse tie next week and will also need a win to progress to the semi-finals. They host Inter Milan and bookmakers are quoting Inter at 9/2 with Chelsea firm favourite at 4/6. Like the other two home sides, Chelsea should be hard to beat at home.
In Champions League outright betting, Barcelona are favourites at 3/1 to take the title with Chelsea and Manchester United next best at 5/1. Real Madrid are on the third line of betting at 13/2. The betting odds surrounding Inter Milan’s chances are interesting. They are on the fourth line of betting at 10/1 despite being unwanted in next week’s clash against Chelsea. However, as we all know, these tournament are decided on aggregate scores and anything could happen. Anyone for Inter to progress through to the next round at the expense of Chelsea?
