Can Chelsea Make It A Double?

Online bookmakers have tightened Chelsea’s odds in this weekend’s FA Cup Final to 1/5 while relegation bound Portsmouth are at 13/1 (90 minute betting). The draw is also at decent odds with many bookmakers quoting in excess of 6/1. While Chelsea are worth favourites to lift the coveted cup, Portsmouth’s woes this season will see them go into the final as sentimental favourites.

One trap that many betters will fall into when looking at this match is Chelsea’s 8-0 thrashing of Wigan yesterday. The psychology of yesterday’s game is entirely different to what you can expect this coming weekend. Yesterday’s game for Wigan had no meaning apart from pride. Once Chelsea had a goal or two on the board, that was it, they weren’t going to win so they effectively packed up shop and let Chelsea have the game.

This weekend, Portsmouth will be playing for more than pride. They have been humiliated at times this year. Not on the field, but in the media and by the league itself. Losing 9 Premier League points (when they went into receivership) effectively ended their year months ago. Despite that, they have continued to play well in this particular competition.

There will also be the financial incentive. Portsmouth has been close to bankruptcy and a win will certainly add plenty to their finances – the players may even get paid. You can expect a much closer game than yesterday and while Chelsea deserve to be favourites, Portsmouth at 13/1 and the 90 minute draw at 6/1 certainly look appealing. When it comes to lifting the cup, online bookmakers are not so generous, they have Portsmouth at 7/1 and Chelsea at 1/7 – I’ll take the 90 minute odds this time around.
