Bookmakers have made Rory McIlroy the clear favourite in the European Masters that starts today, an interesting choice given his up-and-down form this year. We all know that golf is a strange game where you can play with absolute brilliance on one day, then play like a weekend hacker the next – and McIlroy does at times fit that profile. At his best, he would win this tournament with ease, however, as a punter, the key is to back him at his best, and that’s an unknown quantity.
At 5/1, McIlroy is a real risk, especially when there is better value in those behind him in the market. Lee Westwood is the second favourite at 10/1 with the young Matteo Manassero next best at 18/1. Manassero is good value, especially in each-way markets for a top five finish. Bookmakers are paying 9/2 for Manassero each way, much better value than McIlroy at 5/1.
The only other player in the market is Martin Kaymer at 20/1 while there has been a little money for Alexander Noren who is in from 33/1 to 25/1 – he could be worth watching after today’s play. If you are looking for longer priced tips, there has been money for Edoardo Molinari, in from 45/1 to 33/1, and for Bradley Dredge, in from 60/1 to 40/1.
Golf often throws up surprise results and the European Masters shouldn’t be any different. McIlroy has the skills to win this tournament, however, if he slips up there are plenty behind him ready to pounce. We’re tipping Manassero each way at good odds and, for real value, Open winner Darren Clarke each way at 60/1
